The Kenyan community in Australia is calling for transparency and accountability following the death of Sheila Chebii, a young Kenyan woman who died while carrying out her work duties in Sydney in May 2026.

Speaking during an interview, Kokwet NSW Australia President Elvis Langas said the family, friends, and the wider Kenyan diaspora community are seeking clear answers regarding the circumstances surrounding Chebii’s death.
According to Langas, concerns have emerged over the timeliness and adequacy of communication provided to the family since the incident occurred. He noted that questions remain regarding the exact sequence of events leading to her death and whether all workplace safety and emergency response protocols were properly followed.
“The family is simply seeking answers. Sheila went to work and never came home. Her loved ones deserve transparency, accountability, and assurance that every aspect of this matter is being thoroughly investigated,” Langas said.
The community is seeking information on investigations being conducted by NSW Police, SafeWork NSW, the Coroner, the employer, and the premises where the incident occurred.

Langas said community members have expressed concern that considerable time has passed without comprehensive information being provided to the family regarding the circumstances surrounding Chebii’s death.
The Kenya High Commission in Canberra has been informed of the matter and has acknowledged concerns raised by members of the Kenyan community.
Community leaders, the funeral committee, and the family have also engaged legal representatives and relevant authorities in an effort to ensure the matter receives appropriate attention and that all facts are established.
In recent weeks, peaceful community initiatives, including petitions and public gatherings, have been organised to amplify calls for transparency and justice.

Langas emphasized that the family’s objective is not to interfere with ongoing investigations but to ensure that a thorough, independent, and transparent process is followed.
The family is seeking a full account of the events leading to Chebii’s death, timely communication from investigating authorities, assurance that all workplace fatality protocols were followed, accountability where failures may have occurred, and ultimately justice, closure, and dignity for Sheila and her loved ones.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing
