North Rift Erupts in Joy as Kenya Lands 2029 World Athletics Championships

Excitement and celebration have swept through Kenya’s athletics heartland in the North Rift following the announcement that Kenya will host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi.
Kenya becomes the first African nation to host the global showpiece, a milestone that has been widely welcomed by athletes, coaches and officials in Eldoret, known as the City of Champions.
Speaking in Eldoret, Athletics Kenya Central Rift Chairman Abraham Mutai said the hosting rights are a huge win for the country but warned that preparations must begin immediately.
“This is historic for Kenya. The work starts now. We must invest in young athletes who will have the rare honour of representing Kenya on home soil,” Mutai said.
Former World 800 metres Champion Janet Chepkosgei said the news rekindled memories of her own glory days on the track, adding that she wishes she could lace up again for 2029.
“I am so excited. I wish I could compete in 2029, but my time has passed. I want to tell the young athletes, this is your golden chance, start preparing now and make Kenya proud,” Chepkosgei said.
Athletics coach David Leting echoed the sentiments, noting that sustained training, proper funding and structured support for emerging talent will be crucial.
“Champions are not made in a day. If we want to dominate in 2029, we must support our juniors from the grassroots,” Leting noted.
The fraternity expressed confidence that with early planning and unity, Kenya will deliver a world-class championship and maintain its dominance in athletics.
