PS Kipronoh and Head of Public Service Koskei Tour KALRO Tea Research Institute in Kericho

Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh Paul, CBS, today accompanied the Head of Public Service, Hon. Felix Koskei, during a visit to the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) Tea Research Institute in Kericho County. The delegation toured laboratories, the cottage unit, the Research and Development Factory, and experimental fields, while engaging the Institute’s management on its strategic priorities.
Tea remains a vital source of livelihood for thousands of Kenyan families and a cornerstone of our national economy. The work being undertaken at TRI therefore directly impacts farmers. The Institute is currently researching 62 climate‑resilient tea cultivars, advancing value addition, and equipping farmers with knowledge to translate research into improved production at the farm level.
They commended TRI’s focus on developing tea varieties resilient to climate change and pioneering new approaches to value addition. Such innovations are essential to boosting productivity, reducing vulnerability, and securing better returns for farmers.
The Government remains committed to ensuring that TRI has the capacity to conduct world‑class research and, most importantly, that this research reaches farmers to transform livelihoods across the country.
In attendance were Principal Secretaries Dr. Aurelia Rono (Parliamentary Affairs) and Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment), together with KALRO Director General Dr. Patrick Ketiem and Tea Research Institute Director Lilian Kerio. Their presence underscored the collective resolve to strengthen Kenya’s tea sector and safeguard its future.
