A Night in the Cold for a Cause He Believes In

By Gladys Yator – Nairobi, Kenya

While many residents sought warmth indoors, Denis Kibiwott from Kipsaos, Metkei, spent 24 hours in the cold streets of Eldoret Town, determined to share a message he strongly believes in. His mission was to express support for President William Ruto and encourage Kenyans to reflect on what he views as the administration’s achievements.

Kibiwott said the “Wantam” chants against the President trouble him because, in his view, the country has made significant progress over the last three years, especially for young people. He pointed to opportunities in the creative sector, saying many youths are now earning an income through content creation and other digital platforms.

He also praised the Social Health Authority (SHA), noting that healthcare services have become more accessible through a simple registration process. On security, he said communities once affected by banditry are experiencing greater peace, allowing residents to pursue their livelihoods without constant fear.

Calling on Kenyans to reject propaganda, Kibiwott urged citizens to make use of the opportunities and infrastructure available to them. He cited affordable fertilizer, improved roads and access to markets as some of the developments that are helping transform lives across the country.

Using a simple but powerful illustration, Kibiwott said God created rivers, but water does not find its way into cooking pots on its own. People must make the effort to fetch it. In the same way, he argued, development can only improve lives when citizens take advantage of the opportunities placed before them.

After completing his 24-hour vigil, Kibiwott thanked security officers and county authorities for ensuring his safety throughout the exercise. His message remained clear from start to finish: appreciate the progress that has been made, make use of the opportunities available and work together to build a better future.
