A total of 48 inmates have been released from Bomet Prison in a move aimed at reducing congestion in correctional facilities across the county.
The release exercise was presided over by Bomet High Court Judge Hon. Julius Ngarngar, who said the initiative allows inmates nearing the end of their jail terms to reunite with their families and rebuild their lives.

“This exercise is part of our efforts to decongest prisons in Bomet. We conduct it every two months to ensure that inmates who have shown good conduct and are about to complete their sentences can go back home,” said Justice Ngarngar.
He further encouraged inmates still facing trial to embrace the plea bargain process, saying it offers a chance for lighter sentences and helps reduce case backlogs in court.
“If you are in remand, consider plea bargaining. It will not only ease your case but also reduce the burden of pending cases in our courts,” he added.
Justice Ngarngar also revealed that offenders with minor or petty cases may be placed on probation programs rather than being sent to prison, as part of ongoing efforts to manage the prison population.
The event marks the beginning of a renewed decongestion exercise expected to be conducted regularly in Bomet and other parts of the country.
