WASPA Festival Opens in Kericho with Call for Better Water Services

The Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) has opened its annual culture and sports festival in Kericho County, bringing together about 40 water and sanitation organisations from across the country.
More than 5,000 participants gathered at the Kericho Teachers Training College field for the opening ceremony and sporting activities, which featured energetic competition and cultural performances.
WASPA Chairman Thomas Odong said the festival provides an opportunity for water service providers to build teamwork, share experiences and benchmark service delivery.
Odong also raised concern over the effects of climate change and rising operational costs on the water sector. He called on the government to implement measures to address challenges affecting the production and distribution of clean and safe water.
He also praised President William Ruto’s 15-billion-tree planting initiative, saying it would play an important role in protecting Kenya’s environment and securing the country’s future livelihoods.
Speaking on behalf of Kericho Governor, Kericho County Executive Committee Member for Finance Jackson Rop welcomed the participants and said the county remains committed to providing water services without political interference.
Rop said Kericho is among the counties making significant progress in expanding access to piped water through the Kericho Water and Sanitation Company (KEWASCO)’s last-mile connectivity programme.
Kericho County Assembly Water Committee Chairman Peter Kemoi said although Kericho has abundant water resources, such forums remain important in addressing challenges facing the sector and developing long-term solutions.
The festival features more than 20 sporting disciplines alongside various cultural activities.
Organisers said the event is not only about winning trophies but also about building friendships, sharing knowledge and learning from one another to improve water and sanitation services across the country.
WASPA has called on both the national and county governments to support sustainable water management and ensure continuity in the provision of water services.
