Mystery Deepens Over Mass Burial of Unidentified Bodies in Kericho

Authorities are under scrutiny following the burial of multiple unidentified bodies at the public cemetery in Kericho County, prompting questions over legality, accountability, and adherence to inter-county procedures. The issue was formally raised in Parliament by Kericho County Woman Representative Beatrice Kemei, who sought a comprehensive explanation from the Ministry of Interior regarding the circumstances surrounding the burials.

In the statement presented, concerns were highlighted over whether proper authorization was obtained before the bodies were interred. Particular focus was placed on whether the Nyamira County government secured the necessary approvals from Kericho County authorities and relevant national agencies, in line with established legal and inter-county protocols.

The matter has been further complicated by discrepancies in the reported number of bodies. While initial approvals allegedly covered the burial of 13 bodies, investigations revealed that a total of 33 bodies were actually buried. Lawmakers are now demanding clarity on the origin, identity, and circumstances surrounding the deaths of the individuals, as well as the justification for what appears to be a mass disposal.

The government has indicated plans to undertake forensic investigations aimed at identifying the bodies and notifying next of kin. Officials say this process will involve detailed data analysis and coordination with relevant agencies to ensure that families receive closure and that the deceased are accorded dignified burials.

Meanwhile, investigations into the deaths, transportation, and burial process are ongoing, with authorities under pressure to establish accountability and prevent a recurrence. The case has sparked public concern over transparency in handling unidentified bodies and raised broader questions about compliance with burial regulations across county governments.
