TEGLA LOROUPE LEADS 840-KILOMETRE RUN FOR REFUGEES, PEACE AND EDUCATION.
By Tom Chepsoi | KAKUMA/KALOBEYEI, TURKANA.
From the dusty paths of Kalobeyei to the heart of Nairobi, a legendary Kenyan athlete is preparing for another extraordinary journey, this time, not for a medal, but for a cause.
Ambassador Tegla Loroupe, one of Kenya’s most celebrated distance runners and a renowned global peace advocate, is set to lead an 840-kilometre, week-long peace and awareness run from Kakuma and Kalobeyei to Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

The run seeks to draw national and international attention to the plight and aspirations of refugees living in Kakuma and Dadaab, while championing peace, education and stronger relations between refugee and host communities.
Loroupe will be joined by Congolese refugee and Peace Ambassador Msafiri Francois, together with refugees, young people and members of host communities along the route.
The journey will traverse nine counties, carrying a message that goes beyond borders:
Refugees are not merely recipients of humanitarian assistance. They are people with dreams, talents, skills and the capacity to contribute to the communities in which they live.

For decades, Kakuma and Dadaab have provided refuge to people fleeing conflict, persecution and instability from across the region and beyond.
But the humanitarian landscape is changing.
Cuts in international humanitarian assistance, including major reductions in U.S. support through USAID, alongside funding pressures facing UNHCR and other humanitarian agencies, have placed additional pressure on refugee services.
At the same time, Kenya is advancing the Shirika Plan, which seeks to move refugee management toward greater socioeconomic inclusion, self-reliance and integration with host communities in Kakuma-Kalobeyei and Dadaab.
For refugees, however, integration is more than a policy document. It is about education, livelihoods, dignity, security and the opportunity to build a future.
And that is where Loroupe’s message comes in.
Having spent much of her life using athletics as a tool for peace, the legendary runner is once again turning her greatest sporting strength into a humanitarian message.
This time, every kilometre is a statement.
Every step speaks for a refugee child seeking an education.
Every step speaks for a family hoping for dignity and self-reliance.

And every step carries a message of peace from Northern Kenya to the nation’s capital.
840 kilometres. Nine counties. One message. That peace has no borders, education creates possibilities, and refugees deserve to be seen not only through the lens of humanitarian need, but through their potential.
As Loroupe and her fellow runners make their way toward Nairobi, the eyes of Kenya and potentially the international community will be on a journey whose destination is not simply Uhuru Park, but a louder conversation about the future of refugees in Kenya.
For Tegla Loroupe, this is another race.
But this time, the prize is hope.
