Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Mutahi Kagwe has called on sugar companies across the country to diversify their operations by venturing into ethanol production.
Speaking during a tour of West Valley Sugar Company, Kagwe noted that besides sugar manufacturing, the government also depends on ethanol produced from sugarcane to support the nation’s energy needs.

He commended West Valley Sugar Company for its contribution to both sugar and ethanol production, saying the firm’s efforts have significantly supported Kenya’s energy sector and yielded positive results.
Kagwe further stated that the privatization of sugar companies has revitalized the industry, leading to a 20 percent increase in sugar production since the initiative was introduced.

Regarding the election of Sugar Board directors, the Cabinet Secretary clarified that the government does not take part in the process and urged farmers to adhere to the law while carrying out their responsibilities.

West Valley Sugar Company Director Ben Soi said the sugarcane industry is performing strongly, resulting in reduced sugar imports. Meanwhile, sugarcane farmer Charles Sigei attributed improved farming activities to better access to fertilizers and prompt payments to farmers.
