The Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation and Sanlam Allianz Holdings (Kenya) PLC have renewed their commitment to supporting children with disabilities through the second edition of their annual Inclusive Sports and Wellness Event, aimed at promoting inclusion, social development, and empowerment.
The initiative comes at a time when children with disabilities in Kenya continue to face significant challenges in accessing inclusive education, therapy, and social opportunities. According to the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), 11.4 percent of children aged between 3 and 21 years live with a disability or special need, yet many remain excluded from essential support systems.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Robert Nyarango, Chief Executive Officer of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital and Trustee of the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, said the programme is helping create inclusive spaces where children with disabilities can develop critical life skills and realize their full potential.
“The overall goal of the project is to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities, ensuring greater opportunities for employment and economic empowerment. Our conviction is that if we build the social and functional skills of children with disabilities, then they will be independent and have the capacity to participate in gainful and sustainable economic activities,” said Dr. Nyarango.
He emphasized that achieving meaningful inclusion requires collective action from families, communities, institutions, and policymakers. “The overall victory will come when everyone is committed to building inclusive spaces to help children with disabilities thrive,” he added.
The sports and wellness event brought together children with disabilities, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and corporate partners in a celebration of diversity and inclusion. Organizers say the initiative is part of broader efforts to raise awareness, strengthen support networks, and advocate for equal opportunities for all children regardless of ability.
