Ruto Announces Electricity Connection for 15,000 Households in Kwale
By Shadrack Mutai – Nairobi, Kenya
President William Ruto has announced that 15,000 households in Kwale County will be connected to electricity under an ongoing rural electrification programme.
Speaking in Kinango during the launch of electricity connection equipment under the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), President Ruto said the government has allocated KSh1.8 billion to support the project. He noted that 12,000 customers have already been connected to power over the last three years.

Acting REREC Chief Executive Officer Davies Cheruiyot said the corporation has set aside KSh6.1 billion to connect 53,189 households to electricity through more than 600 projects during the current financial year.
Cheruiyot added that the equipment launched in Kinango will help connect 400 households to electricity.
The President said the government remains committed to ensuring that more Kenyans, especially those living in rural and underserved areas, gain access to affordable and reliable electricity. He noted that expanding power connectivity is key to improving livelihoods and supporting economic growth at the grassroots.
Residents in the area welcomed the initiative, saying improved access to electricity will boost small businesses, enhance security and improve learning conditions for students. Local leaders also expressed optimism that the programme will open up more investment opportunities in the region.
REREC is also expected to launch additional electrification projects in Hindi, Lamu County, as part of efforts to expand access to reliable power across the country. The projects are expected to support the government’s broader agenda of increasing national electricity connectivity and promoting rural development.
