Kenya Welcomes Azamara Journey as Cruise Tourism Surges

Kenya has reinforced its ambition to become the leading cruise tourism hub in the Indian Ocean following the arrival of Azamara Journey at the Port of Mombasa with 690 passengers on board.

The visit marks the third major cruise ship call of the 2025/26 season, after earlier calls by SH Diana and Crystal Symphony, highlighting the growing appeal of Kenya’s coast to global cruise liners.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the arrival signals strong growth in cruise tourism and reflects the success of efforts to diversify Kenya’s tourism offering beyond wildlife safaris. “Today, we are thrilled to welcome the Azamara Journey and her passengers to the Port of Mombasa. This is a clear signal that Kenya is increasingly being recognised as a premier cruise destination,” Miano said.

She noted that cruise tourism is now a key pillar of the blue economy, delivering real economic benefits to coastal communities and the wider national economy. In 2024, Kenya recorded a 140 per cent increase in arrivals by sea, contributing to a record tourism performance that injected KES 452.2 billion into the economy.
Miano attributed the growth to strategic investments in infrastructure and policy reforms, including the modern cruise terminal at the Port of Mombasa and the streamlined Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which has improved access for international visitors arriving by sea.

“These improvements are making it easier than ever for the world to experience the magic of Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline,” she said.
The Cabinet Secretary added that cruise passengers significantly boost local businesses such as tour operators, artisans, transport providers and hospitality establishments, while also promoting cultural exchange and showcasing Kenya’s rich coastal heritage.
With more cruise liners adding Mombasa to their itineraries, Miano said Kenya’s global visibility as a diverse, competitive and sustainable tourism destination will continue to rise.
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to positioning Kenya as the leading cruise hub in the Indian Ocean under the blue economy agenda, welcoming visitors with the message: “Kenya is truly the Origin of Wonder.”
