High Court in Eldoret Directs State to File Witness Affidavits in Chesir Abduction Case

The High Court in Eldoret has directed the state to file affidavits of two individuals who witnessed the alleged abduction of Bethwell Chesir, a personal assistant to Marakwet East Member of Parliament Kangogo Bowen.
Through a virtual session, Justice Patrick Otieno ordered the state to file the affidavits by Friday, 15th August afternoon, before the case returns on Monday, 18th August.
The family of Chesir had petitioned the court to compel the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, and the Office of the Attorney General to produce their kin after filing a habeas corpus application.
Chesir’s family, through their lawyer Steven Ombego, says they have every reason to believe police were involved in the abduction that happened in Kaptagat on August 7.
Despite the IG denying custody of Chesir, witnesses allege the abductors were all armed with rifles. As Ombego argues, there is no civilian group that can carry guns and conduct such audacious abductions.
Chesir was on his way to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital from Nairobi to check on his ailing father when the incident happened.
