Unrest in Litein High School Over ‘Undercooked Rice’
By Robert Siele |
A meal suspected to contain undercooked rice triggered unrest at Litein Boys High School on Wednesday night, resulting in significant property damage and prompting a rapid police intervention.
Police reports indicate that the incident at the school in Bureti constituency began around 9:00 PM when students voiced complaints about being served poorly cooked rice. What began as discontent in the dining area soon escalated into a violent protest, with students destroying property, including classroom windows and the main gate.
Overwhelmed by the chaos, the school administration called in law enforcement. Officers, led by Litein OCPD Benedict Chirchir, responded swiftly and had to deploy tear gas to control the situation as students clashed with them on school grounds.
Chirchir stated that assessments of the damage were ongoing but confirmed that calm had been restored and no serious injuries were reported.
