Elizabeth Oyengo and Elisha Kipsoi emerged victorious in the 21km races at the Standard Chartered Marathon Mombasa Satellite Run on Sunday at Mama Ngina Waterfront, a key event building momentum for the main Nairobi Marathon set to take place on Sunday, 26th October 2025, at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.

The run which over 700 coastal runners participate offered categories from a 5km family fun run to the 21km race. Kipsoi not only won the men’s category but also achieved a significant personal milestone. “I’m excited that today I’ve achieved my personal best time ever, which marks a big improvement for me. I’ve been training hard and look forward to participating in major races in the coming years,” said Kipsoi.

The Mombasa event comes as the flagship Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, scheduled for next weekend, shatters its own records. This year’s marathon has attracted over 30,000 runners from 92 countries and secured a record KES 229 million in sponsorship, a 32% increase from 2024.

David Mwindi, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, linked the satellite runs to the marathon’s growing national appeal, saying, “The inclusion of satellite races reflects our commitment to promoting accessible fitness and sporting opportunities across the country. Each year, we have seen an increase in participation, motivating us to continue hosting these community-driven events.”

The record funds are set to power Standard Chartered’s Futuremakers initiative, which focuses on equipping young people, women, and persons with disabilities with employable skills. With a ambitious target of raising KES 75 million this year, up from KES 48 million in 2024, the 22nd edition of the marathon is poised to be the most impactful yet, cementing its role as a premier sporting event that drives both athletic excellence and inclusive social development.
