Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja, in collaboration with the National Police Service and Kenya Power, has shut down an illegal electricity distribution hub near the National Archives in the Central Business District (CBD).

The rogue station, which supplied power to shops while tampering with street lighting and CCTV systems, had plunged sections of the city into darkness, fueling muggings and vandalism. A manhunt is now underway to track its mastermind.

Sakaja, joined by the Nairobi Regional Commander and Kenya Power officials, stressed that reliable lighting is a matter of public safety, not just an urban service. “We cannot allow criminals to thrive because of illegal connections and sabotage. Nairobi will not provide a safe haven for such operations,” he said.

Authorities have rolled out a plan to secure electricity feed points, replace faulty lamps, protect maintenance crews, and fast-track repairs in high-risk areas. The Governor also appealed to the national government to address funding gaps and urged businesses to install CCTV cameras and share intelligence.

For Nairobians, the move offers hope for safer streets, brighter nights, and renewed order in the CBD.
