Dettol has partnered with the Nairobi County Government to mark Global Handwashing Day with a hygiene sensitisation campaign for learners. The event, held at Rising Star Shining Academy, brought together students, teachers, and community members, who received training and Dettol bar soaps to encourage proper handwashing habits. This initiative aligns with this year’s theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero,” highlighting the simple power of handwashing to prevent disease.
The partnership underscores a shared commitment to public health. Mustapha Bugaje, Country Manager for Reckitt Kenya, stated, “Global Handwashing Day resonates deeply with our mission… We are proud to collaborate with the Nairobi County Government, a key partner in driving community health.” This effort addresses a critical need, as Ministry of Health data reveals approximately 85% of schools in rural areas and informal settlements lack adequate handwashing facilities.
Health officials praised the collaboration for its direct impact on community well-being. Dr. Robert Kariuki, Sub-County Medical Officer of Health for Ruaraka, commended Dettol for “promoting cleaner, healthier learning environments.” He emphasized that “good hygiene is the first line of defence against many preventable diseases.” Through such school and community outreach, the program aims to empower children to take charge of their health and reduce the spread of illnesses.
