Bomet County Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir ‘Toto’ has raised concern over the rising cases of defilement and gender-based violence in the region.

Speaking during a women empowerment event in Kosia, Sigor Ward, Chepalungu Sub-county, Chepkorir said it was disturbing to witness elderly men sexually abusing minors.

“It is very disturbing to find an old person engaging in sexual acts with a minor. What kind of behaviour is that?” She posed.

She cited a recent case in Longisa where a four-year-old girl was defiled by an adult man. The matter, she noted, is currently before a court of law.

The Woman Rep urged the community to come together and find sustainable ways to end such uncalled-for behaviour. She also cautioned parents against settling defilement cases at home, saying many incidents remain unreported due to cultural silence and stigma.

“We need to sit down as a community and chart a way forward. Parents must stop resolving GBV at home”, She said.

Chepkorir further lamented the continued prevalence of gender-based violence in the county, despite efforts by both government and non-governmental organizations.

“We still have cases of FGM in Bomet. Married women are still undergoing the cut, and young girls are being forced into it. We must talk about this.”

She urged residents to speak up against GBV and work together to protect vulnerable members of society, especially women and children.

The empowerment event also encouraged residents to engage in economic activities to boost their livelihoods. Sigor MCA Peter Mutai and other local leaders were present at the function.
