Outcry in Kipkelion Over County Assembly’s Nominee Rejection

By Robert Siele & Leonida Chepkorir,  Kericho County

Residents of Kipkelion in Kericho County have protested the decision by the Kericho County Assembly to reject two nominees to the Kericho County Public Service Board, describing the move as unfair and discriminatory to their region.

Speaking to the media, the residents led by Jeremiah Koech criticized the rejection of CPS Joyce Chepkemoi Kilel, who had been nominated by Governor Dr. Erick K. Mutai for the position of Secretary/CEO of the Kericho County Public Service Board. They argued that Ms. Kilel was qualified for the position and that the Assembly’s decision was an injustice to the people of Kipkelion.

John Ngetich noted that Kipkelion residents have for years felt marginalized in county appointments and development matters. He said the rejection of Joyce Chepkemoi Kilel further reinforces concerns that the region is being sidelined in key county leadership positions.

The residents also urged the County Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Dr. Patrick C. Mutai, to convene a special sitting and reconsider the nominees who were rejected. They specifically called for the approval of Mr. Leonard Kiprotich Kirui, who had been nominated as a member of the board, and CPS Joyce Chepkemoi Kilel as Secretary/CEO.

Their sentiments come days after residents of Sigowet/Soin similarly expressed dissatisfaction over the Assembly’s decision to reject Leonard Kiprotich Kirui’s nomination.

According to a letter from the Office of the Speaker dated June 2, 2026, the County Assembly approved four nominees to the board: Dr. Joseph Kipkemoi Koskei (Chairperson), Ms. Chebet Eileen (Member), Dr. Benjamin Kiprono (Member), and Dr. Kipyegon Raymond Kemboi (Member). However, the Assembly declined to approve Mr. Leonard Kiprotich Kirui for the position of Member and CPS Joyce Chepkemoi Kilel for the position of Secretary/CEO.

The residents maintained that they will continue pursuing the matter until their concerns are addressed, insisting that all regions of Kericho County deserve fair representation in public appointments and county leadership structures.
