KU and KCA Make Winning Start at KUSF Women Championships

Kenyatta University (KU) and Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) University began their campaigns with victories at the 15th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation Women Only Championships taking place at Taita Taveta University grounds.

 

Salome Mndala scored a hat trick as KCA defeated hosts Taita Taveta University 3-0 in their opening football match. Mndala struck just two minutes into the game before doubling the lead in the 14th minute to give KCA a 2-0 advantage at halftime. She later completed her hat trick in the 39th minute to seal the win.

KCA head coach Anthony Onyango described the result as a historic moment for the institution.

 

“We played against the hosts and it was a tough match but we managed to win. This is the first time we have won an opening match in such tournaments and it has boosted our confidence heading into the remaining matches,” said Onyango.

 

In another football match, Kenyatta University secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Chuka University. Eunice Opiyo scored the decisive goal three minutes after kick off to hand KU maximum points.

KU captain Shana Masinde said the team is determined to go one step further after finishing runners up last year.

 

“We were finalists last year and we have come back determined to win the tournament. Our coaches have prepared us well and the school has provided the facilities. The only thing remaining now is to win the trophy,” she said.

 

In basketball, defending champions Zetech University began their title defence with a dominant 60-5 victory over Kenya Methodist University. Chuka edged Kenyatta University 24-23 while Machakos University defeated Kabarak University 35-31. Kisii University also registered wins against Technical University of Kenya and Kenya Methodist University, while KCA beat Dedan Kimathi University of Technology 25-15.

 

In hockey, Kenyatta University played to a goalless draw against Kisii as former champions Maseno University defeated University of Eldoret 3-1.
