CS Condemns Brutal Assaults, Vows Tough Action on Gender-Based Violence

The Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture and Children Services, Ms. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, has condemned a series of shocking violent incidents across the country, describing them as violations of human rights and an affront to the Constitution of Kenya.

While addressing residents in Narok County, the CS singled out the brutal assault of a young woman by her brothers after she chose whom to marry. She described the attack as “appalling” and a direct violation of her dignity, liberty, and security—rights guaranteed under Articles 28, 29, and 45 of the Constitution.
The CS also expressed outrage over tragedies reported in Bomet and Tana River counties. In Bomet, a father allegedly killed his son as the mother looked on helplessly. In Tana River, investigators revealed that a man buried his children alive under the guise of “content creation” as their mother watched.
“These acts are reprehensible, unlawful, and gross violations of children’s rights,” she said, stressing that children must never be reduced to tools for entertainment or online popularity. “Any form of exploitation or harm disguised as creativity will be met with the full force of the law.”
She called on community leaders, religious institutions, families, and citizens at large to unite in combating gender-based violence, warning that no one is safe if such acts persist.
The CS further announced that the Presidential Taskforce on Gender-Based Violence, including Femicide, has completed its report, which the government will implement urgently. She pledged to expand survivor support services, strengthen coordination, and deliver swift justice for perpetrators.
“To every Kenyan, do not look away,” she urged. “Protecting life, dignity, and rights is a shared duty. Together, we must end violence, uphold the Constitution, and build a safer, more just society for all.”
