Angata Residents Protest, Demand Arrest and Transfer of Transmara South DCC
By Albert Tonui
Residents of Angata Barikoi took to the streets in a heated protest, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of Transmara South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Abdihakim Jubat.
The demonstrators accused DCC Jubat of overseeing a controversial land demarcation operation in Angata Barikoi, which reportedly escalated into violence when locals resisted. According to eyewitnesses, General Service Unit (GSU) officers opened fire on the crowd, resulting in five deaths and several injuries.
“We hold DCC Jubat responsible for the loss of five lives in Angata,” said Ruth Chebet, one of the protest leaders. “Just yesterday, three more people were killed by police under his watch. Why hasn’t he been arrested, prosecuted, or at least transferred?”
The residents called on President William Ruto to intervene, urging him to not only remove the DCC from his post in Lolgorian but also ensure he faces legal action for his alleged role in the deadly confrontation.
“We need a lasting solution to the Angata land dispute,” said David Tonui, a former parliamentary aspirant for Kilgoris. “The President must act swiftly and decisively.”
Protesters also lashed out at Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of neglecting their concerns and failing to address the volatile situation.
“CS Murkomen has shown incompetence and is a disgrace to the Kenya Kwanza administration. He should step down and make way for someone capable,” said former MCA Gabriel Mibei.
Angata UDA Chairman Bismarck Cheruiyot echoed the call for accountability, insisting that DCC Jubat be dismissed and handed over to authorities for prosecution.
“Why hasn’t CS Murkomen fired DCC Jubat?” Cheruiyot asked. “He led the GSU officers who killed our people. The government must act now.”
The protests come amid growing tension in the region, with residents demanding justice and a permanent resolution to the long-standing land conflict in Angata Barikoi.
