The Ndhiwa Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court has handed two men 10-year jail terms each or a fine of KSh 5 million for vandalising electricity infrastructure in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County.
David Ochieng Lang’o was arrested in July 2025 in a joint sting involving Kenya Power security officers and Migori Police Station officers. He was found with 10 jerricans of transformer oil believed to have been siphoned from vandalised equipment. He pleaded not guilty, but the court ruled that the evidence against him was overwhelming.
The second suspect, Godwin Omondi Oduogi, was arrested in April 2025 by DCI officers after unlawfully disconnecting a customer. Investigators also found him in possession of a transformer fuse. He also denied the charges but was convicted.
The Court said the sentencing aims to curb the rising cases of transformer vandalism and recurrent power outages that have hurt households and businesses in Ndhiwa Sub-County.
Kenya Power’s Security Services Manager, Major Geoffrey Kigen (Rtd), welcomed the ruling, saying it delivers justice to affected communities and businesses.
“This ruling reinforces our commitment to safeguarding electricity infrastructure. We thank the Judiciary and law enforcement agencies for their continued support,” he said.
Kigen urged the public to report suspicious activities around power installations, warning that vandalism disrupts livelihoods and poses safety risks.
Kenya Power says it will continue working with security agencies to stamp out vandalism and electricity theft to protect the integrity of the national grid.
