The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has thrown its weight behind President William Ruto’s new directive for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), endorsing a plan to prioritize the hiring of teaching graduates who have waited years for employment.

Malel Langat – KNUT National Deputy Chairman

The union’s national deputy chairman, Malel Langat, praised the proposal, stating it would address the plight of qualified teachers who have been unable to secure jobs despite graduating long ago.

The endorsement followed a high-profile meeting between the president and educators at State House over the weekend. KNUT lauded the gathering as a significant demonstration of the administration’s commitment to the education sector.

“The president’s engagement shows he is listening and that he cares about resolving the issues facing teachers,” Langat said.

Beyond the hiring initiative, the government also used the meeting to make several key promises. Union officials expressed strong support for commitments to allocate sufficient funds for annual teacher promotions and to address longstanding concerns regarding educators’ health cover.

Langat also voiced confidence in the government’s newly outlined strategies for the disbursement of funds to schools, suggesting the measures would significantly improve efficiency.

The announcements signal a collaborative effort between the government and the powerful teachers’ union to tackle some of the most persistent challenges within Kenya’s education system.
