The government has stepped up its efforts to combat cattle rustling, now turning attention to the buyers involved in the illicit trade.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen raised concerns that certain markets in the Kerio Valley region are enabling the sale of stolen livestock.

“Some of these markets are selling livestock to buyers who transport them to Nairobi and other areas,” said the CS while addressing journalists following a security meeting in Maralal.

Speaking during a leaders’ security forum in Samburu County, the CS emphasized that anyone found to be part of the network will face legal consequences.

“I’ve instructed our intelligence and security agencies to apprehend all those driving this vice, especially the buyers who are sustaining cattle rustling in the area,” Murkomen stated.

He highlighted that the region continues to suffer significantly from persistent cattle rustling and bandit attacks.
