Mogo Launches SAKA – A Public Database for Stolen Vehicles and Motorbikes

By Samson Kurgat,

Mogo, a leading asset financier in East Africa, has introduced SAKA — Kenya’s first digital public database for stolen vehicles and motorbikes. The platform offers a centralized and user-friendly system where individuals can report and verify stolen assets in real time. This initiative responds to the growing issue of vehicle and motorbike theft, which has had serious financial and security implications across the country.

Sectors like boda boda and matatu, which employ over three million Kenyans, suffer annual losses of around KES 3 billion due to theft and fraud. These losses often go unresolved because of outdated and fragmented reporting systems. SAKA aims to change that by simplifying the process and making data more accessible to users, authorities, and stakeholders alike.

Motor vehicle theft in Kenya happens under various scenarios, including violent robberies, scams, and carjackings. While thousands of arrests have been made, very few convictions have followed, showing gaps in enforcement. SAKA seeks to close these gaps by offering a transparent, easily accessible digital reporting tool to improve tracking and recovery.

More than just a reporting system, SAKA promotes public safety and awareness. It empowers Kenyans to “saka ukweli” — search for the truth — before engaging in vehicle-related transactions. Mogo envisions the platform as a game-changer in crime prevention and a step toward a safer, more digitally connected society.
