A family in Tegunot village, Mauche ward, Njoro Sub-county, Nakuru County, has been thrown into deep sorrow and confusion after the body of their loved one mysteriously went missing at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

The family of John Cheruiyot, 66, had gone to the facility on Monday, August 25, 2025, to collect his remains in preparation for burial scheduled for Tuesday, August 26, 2025. However, upon arrival, they were shocked to discover that his body could not be traced.

Despite being shown three different bodies by the mortuary attendants, none of them matched their kin. The family was later informed that John’s body may have been mistakenly released and confused with that of another man from Molo, who was buried on August 19, 2025.

Speaking to reporters, distraught relatives condemned the hospital staff for what they termed as gross negligence and incompetence. They said this was not the first time such a case had occurred at the county referral hospital.

“In February this year, we heard of a child’s body that disappeared from this same mortuary and to date, it has never been found. Now it is our father’s body. We don’t know where to turn,” a family member lamented.

The incident has sparked anger in the local community, with residents questioning the management of the county hospital. The family accused the County Government of Nakuru of failing to ensure efficiency and accountability in its health institutions.

“We have been left in pain twice—first by his death and now by this loss at the mortuary. We appeal to the authorities to take responsibility so that no other family suffers like we have,” another relative added.

As the family struggles to come to terms with the bizarre turn of events, they are also appealing to well-wishers and members of the public to support them as they reorganize burial plans.

The Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital management had not issued an official statement by press time, even as pressure mounts on the county leadership to address the recurring cases of missing bodies at the facility.
