Majority of Kenyans Oppose Ruto-Odinga Broad-Based Government, New Poll Finds

By Samson Kurgat

A new survey conducted by TIFA has revealed that a majority of Kenyans are not in favor of the Broad-Based Government (BBG) formed through an alliance between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. According to the poll, 54 percent of respondents expressed opposition to the political arrangement, while only 22 percent showed support. The findings suggest growing discontent among the public with the unity deal between the ruling party and the former opposition leader.

The survey also highlighted significant polarization in public confidence regarding electoral integrity. Among those who support the government, 38 percent expressed trust in the country’s electoral system. In stark contrast, only 13 percent of BBG opponents said they had confidence in the electoral process, indicating widespread skepticism as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.

Only 20 percent of respondents believe the 2027 elections will be free and fair, a concerning statistic that reflects deep public distrust in Kenya’s democratic institutions. Meanwhile, political speculation continues to swirl around Raila Odinga’s future, with 18 percent of those surveyed predicting he will eventually abandon the BBG alliance and return to the opposition to back a different presidential candidate. Just 23 percent believe Odinga will support Ruto’s re-election bid.

On the international front, the survey revealed that 24 percent of Kenyans remain hopeful that U.S. President Donald Trump’s leadership will benefit Kenya. However, 18 percent believe his presidency will have no impact, while 8 percent were undecided or did not offer an opinion. The data underscores a complex domestic and global outlook as Kenya navigates a turbulent political landscape.
