Majority Leader Takes Governors to Task Over Use of County Funds

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has called on county governments to ensure the responsible use of funds allocated to them, emphasizing that the money should be directed toward meaningful development that benefits residents.

 

Speaking during a thanksgiving event at Buchenge Secondary School in Ainamoi, Kericho County, Cheruiyot also urged county assemblies to diligently carry out their oversight role to guarantee proper use of public funds and resources.

“County governments when you are allocated money you should use it well, it should be used to benefit the residents. I urge the county assemblies to be firm and focused on pushing prudent use of devolved resources “. Said Majority Leader.

 

He specifically appealed to the Kericho County Assembly to expedite investigations into a petition submitted by Deputy Governor Eng. Fred Kirui, which alleges the misappropriation of over Ksh 80 million paid to more than 20 companies for goods and services.

 

“Please speed up the process within seven days or atmost two week for us to who misused the county money because corruption is not tolerated in our county.” Added Cheruiyot.

 

In response, the Kericho County Assembly has established an Ad hoc committee to probe the matter.

 

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Fred Kirui reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding public resources, saying he remains steadfast in that promise since taking office. He urged the county assembly to take necessary steps following the investigation.

“I promised to take care of our resource and make sure it’s properly utilised.” Said Deputy Gorvenor.

 

County Assembly Speaker Dr. Patrick Mutai expressed his readiness to uphold transparency and ensure that the assembly operates effectively to protect public funds.

 

“I am committed to dig deeper and get to any other hidden misused county resources and take it back to where it should be.” Speaker Said.

These developments come amid rising speculation over a possible impeachment motion against the Kericho Governor over alleged financial mismanagement.
