KUPPET Demands Explanation from TSC Over Unwarranted Salary Deductions

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Bomet branch has raised concern over unexplained salary deductions affecting teachers, demanding immediate clarification from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Speaking to Kass TV, Bomet Branch Executive Secretary Paul Kimetto decried what he termed as unfair and arbitrary deductions appearing on teachers’ payslips without any prior communication or consultation with the union.

“It is shocking to find payslips reflecting unexplained deductions. We need to know what these deductions are for,” said Kimmetto.

While commending the recently signed 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as more comprehensive than its predecessor, Kimmetto criticized the salary increments, describing them as insignificant.

“We recently received salary increments for teachers, but they are meaningless. An increment of one thousand shillings followed by deductions of two thousand is a heavy burden for our members,” he lamented.

He warned that unless TSC refunds the deducted amounts, KUPPET would consider legal action to protect teachers’ rights.

In addition, Kimetto urged the government to intervene in the longstanding issue surrounding teachers’ access to medical services at AGC Tenwek Hospital under the current health cover provider, Mikel Insurance Company.

“We have held several meetings with Mikel Insurance and AGC Tenwek Hospital, yet teachers continue facing challenges accessing medical services there,” he said.

KUPPET now wants urgent reforms and transparency in salary processing and health insurance service delivery for teachers.
