Kenya Power has achieved a historic milestone after awarding KSh 3.5 billion in tenders to youth, women, and persons living with disabilities (PWDs), marking a remarkable 470 percent increase from the previous financial year. This performance makes the 2024/2025 financial year the strongest in eight years and reinforces the Company’s commitment to inclusive procurement under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) framework.

Kenya Power’s General Manager for Supply Chain and Logistics, Dr. John Ngeno, attributes this success to deliberate outreach efforts that focused on sensitizing these groups about the procurement opportunities available within the Company. These efforts led to a significant rise in participation and tender uptake among the targeted groups.

During the year under review, youth-owned enterprises received the largest share at KSh 2.2 billion, followed by women-owned businesses at KSh 1.25 billion, while enterprises owned by persons living with disabilities secured KSh 66.7 million. This distribution reflects the growing confidence and engagement of these groups in public procurement processes.

Looking ahead, Kenya Power plans to expand its sensitization forums and introduce comprehensive training sessions that will guide youth, women and PWDs through the bidding process. The Company also intends to engage more closely with PWD groups to understand the unique challenges they face and to design solutions that respond to their needs. Additionally, Kenya Power will strengthen collaborations with financial institutions to enhance access to credit and facilitate effective participation in procurement.

Internally, the Company will intensify sensitization across departments to ensure AGPO opportunities are fully supported, including dedicating common user items to these groups and ensuring prompt payment to boost their cash flow. These efforts are aimed at reinforcing an inclusive and sustainable supply chain that empowers marginalized groups and supports national economic growth.
