Kenya Calls for Bold Global Action at UNEA-7 in Nairobi

Kenya has reaffirmed its leadership in global environmental diplomacy as Environment Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa officially opened the 7th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi.
Addressing ministers and delegates from around the world, Dr. Barasa urged nations to move beyond incremental action and embrace bold, inclusive and science-driven solutions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and land degradation.
She welcomed delegates to Nairobi,UNEP’s global headquarters and highlighted key events, including President William Ruto’s national statement on 11 December, a Kenya–GGGI luncheon on circular economy and plastic pollution, and Kenya’s signature country reception for UNEA-7 participants.
Dr. Barasa noted that UNEA-7 will adopt the Medium-Term Strategy that will guide UNEP’s work in coming years. She said Kenya would push for strategies that prioritize innovation, equity and opportunities for developing nations.
Kenya is sponsoring three resolutions and co-sponsoring two others at the Assembly, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship and global cooperation.”Kenya looks forward to constructively contributing to its finalization, ensuring that the MTP reflects ambition, science-based policy, equity, and opportunities for innovation especially for developing countries”. She said.
She outlined UNEA-7’s core priorities: accelerating sustainable solutions, strengthening resilience, and advancing inclusive governance that empowers women, youth, indigenous peoples and marginalized communities.
Dr. Barasa called on delegates to ensure UNEA-7 “does not just talk about the future, but helps create it,” urging collective action to secure a resilient planet for current and future generations.
