Indian National Arrested in Iten for Alleged Possession of Banned Performance-Enhancing Substances
An Indian national was arrested in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on Monday following a joint operation by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), targeting the distribution and use of prohibited substances in sport.
The suspect, who resides in the internationally renowned high-altitude training town, was found in possession of a variety of banned performance-enhancing substances. According to ADAK, the raid was based on actionable intelligence pointing to possible doping-related activities.
Authorities recovered substances including human growth hormone (HGH), meldonium, and mannitol — all banned under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code due to their association with performance enhancement in competitive sports. IV bags, syringes, and needles, both used and unused, which investigators say suggest active doping practices was also recovered from the raid.
Iten, often dubbed the “home of champions,” is a global hub for elite long-distance runners, attracting athletes from around the world. ADAK has expressed concern over the presence of such substances in the town, warning that their use not only undermines fair play but also poses serious health risks to athletes.
The suspect is currently being held at Iten Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the operation, including possible networks, clients, and any breaches of national and international anti-doping regulations.
In a statement, ADAK affirmed its commitment to eradicating doping in Kenyan sports. “The fight against doping will not relent. We will continue enforcing the World Anti-Doping Code and ADAK’s anti-doping rules until the menace is fully defeated,” said Acting CEO Peninah Wahome.
