From Underdogs to Champions: Simotwet Secondary Stuns in Historic Volleyball Triumph.

By Nicholas Rono.

Simotwet Secondary School has made sporting history after clinching the girls’ volleyball title during the Narok County Secondary Schools Term Two Games, held Friday at Maasai Girls Secondary School grounds.

In their debut appearance at the county level, the unheralded team from Transmara East Sub-county delivered a stunning upset by defeating defending champions Rongena Secondary School in straight sets (3-0)—a result that crowned an incredible underdog story.

As the final whistle blew, the court erupted with emotion. Tears, hugs, and cheers filled the air, as players, coaches, and supporters celebrated a moment that will be remembered for generations.

“This game was very tough, but we told each other we were not going home empty-handed. We fought for every point,” said team captain Sheila Chebet, overwhelmed with emotion. “Coming from a small school, people didn’t expect us to make it past sub-county. But here we are—county champions.”

Head coach Emmanuel Tuei praised the girls’ determination, faith, and tactical discipline.

“It was by God’s hand. These girls played with heart,” he said. “After Rongena beat us 3-2 in the preliminaries, we studied their game, changed our strategy, and the team executed it perfectly.”

He added that once the team settled into the match and claimed the first set, their confidence soared.

“I told them—forget the crowd, forget the past. Play for the name on your jersey, for each other, and for your school.”

Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman Peter Sang hailed the win as a breakthrough for rural schools.

“This win is not just for Simotwet—it’s for every small school that feels overlooked. Our girls have shown that greatness isn’t about school size—it’s about belief and effort,” he said.

He also pledged increased investment in the school’s sports programs.

“We’ve seen how sports can transform students’ confidence and discipline. We will now support more girls and boys to shine.”

Principal Sammy Wakaba could barely contain his emotions as he addressed the team.

“You’ve made us proud beyond words. This is a landmark moment. We are no longer spectators—we are contenders. Our next focus is regionals.”

Simotwet Secondary School will now carry Narok County’s hopes to the Rift Valley Regional Secondary School Games, scheduled for July 15–20 in Uasin Gishu County.

From never qualifying beyond sub-county level to being crowned county champions, Simotwet’s rise is a sporting fairytale—and living proof that with faith, teamwork, and preparation, even the most unlikely dreams can come true.
