The long-awaited establishment of a University in Sigor area of Bomet county is now turning into reality after the announcement of plans to relocate Sigor High School to a new location to pave way for the new institution of higher learning.

In a notice dated July 21, 2025, the school’s Board Secretary Frankline Rutoh announced that the school will be relocating to a new facility at Mismis, within Sigor Ward.

Students are expected to begin reporting to the new facility in August this year marking the end of a long wait by the residents of Sigor.

The relocation comes as part of a broader transformation in the region, one rooted in a political history stretching back nearly a decade.

In 2015, the proposed establishment of Bomet University became a major point of contention between then Deputy President William Ruto and former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto. The two leaders clashed over the location of the proposed University, with Isaac Ruto advocating for Sigor, hoping to uplift the area economically. On his part, William was pushing for Bomet town to spur urban expansion and later establish satellite campuses in other parts of the county.

The disagreement eventually led to a political fallout, with Isaac forming the Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party in what many viewed as a battle for political supremacy.

Isaac Ruto’s stand, however, came at a political cost, he lost his bid for a second term as governor. But now, time has healed political wounds. When William Ruto rose to the presidency, the two reconciled, and the former Governor was appointed as Vice Chair of the Judicial Service Commission.

Now, a decade later, Sigor’s vision for educational and economic transformation is finally taking shape. The Bomet University campus, expected to admit its first students in September.

It will not only serve as a learning institution but also spur economic growth in the region.

During a recent visit to the new Sigor High School site, Chepalungu MP Victor Koech encouraged residents to prepare for the upcoming transformation.

“Once completed, the current Sigor High School facilities will be repurposed to host a satellite campus of Bomet University in Sigor Town. This strategic shift is expected to catalyze economic growth across Sigor and the wider Chepalungu region, while also uplifting the livelihoods of our people through education and opportunity,” said Mandazi.

Koech, who has been instrumental in facilitating the development of the new school, credited former Governor Isaac Ruto for his unwavering commitment to bringing higher education to Sigor.

“This initiative is one that Isaac Ruto holds close to his heart, and I am deeply encouraged to witness his dream moving towards full realization,” he added.
