Nairobi, Jan. 21 — More than 1,200 young people have received the Gold level of the President’s Award Program, the highest recognition for youth achievement in community service, leadership, and personal development, in a ceremony at State House, Nairobi.

The annual awards mark the culmination of a multi-stage program designed to challenge participants across four pillars: community service, skill development, physical endeavor, and leadership. Those reaching the Gold level complete all requirements, surpassing the intermediate Silver and entry-level Bronze awards.

“The award recognizes not just achievement, but character, service, and leadership,” said a State House official, highlighting the program’s role in developing future leaders.

Participants undergo structured mentorship and practical training alongside volunteer and community leaders. The program encourages physical fitness, voluntary service, practical skills, and a residential project, providing young people with experience that complements formal education.

President William Ruto told awardees that their potential is critical to national development.

“The ability of our young people to transform our country is unshakeable. They have the extraordinary competence, energy, resolve, and talent to turn our grand ambitions into reality.” Ruto said. “We are proud of the 1,252 awardees who have demonstrated sustained resilience, commitment, and leadership, qualifying for the Gold prize. Hongera!”

Officials said holders of the Gold Award could be considered for preference in public service recruitment, recognising their commitment to civic and community engagement.

The initiative is part of broader government efforts to integrate structured youth development into social and economic inclusion strategies.

The ceremony drew family members, civil servants, mentors, and other stakeholders, underscoring the role of community support in achieving these milestones.

Observers say that the awards illustrate the value of structured non-formal education in equipping young people with skills, discipline, and leadership capacity alongside academic qualifications.
