Healthcare Experts Urge Stronger Community Support for Children with Disabilities

By Jacquelyne Arusei | Nairobi,

Healthcare professionals are calling for urgent support from communities, government, and corporates to bridge a growing gap in services for children with disabilities, as diagnoses continue to rise across the country.

This appeal was made during a workshop hosted by Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in partnership with Sanlam Allianz Holdings (Kenya) PLC, where parents and caregivers were trained on nurturing independence and socialisation in children with special needs. The session also highlighted the critical role of inclusive community support in improving outcomes for children with disabilities.

The workshop is part of a three-year empowerment initiative launched in September 2024 by Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, Sanlam Allianz Holdings (Kenya) PLC, and the Sanlam Foundation, supported by the Allianz Group Social Impact Fund. Earlier in February 2025, 113 children benefited from a sports and arts day themed “Celebrating Abilities, Together We Shine,” which featured occupational therapy to boost their social and cognitive skills.
