Mau Forest Complex: A New Era of Conservation in Kenya

By Shadrack Mutai | Nairobi,

The Mau Forest Complex (MFC) restoration initiative is gaining momentum, with a unique approach that is winning public support and fast-tracking Kenya’s ambitious environmental goals.

Chief Forest Conservator Alex Lemarkoko says the programme is key to both environmental conservation and achieving the President’s directive to plant 15 billion trees nationwide. “Previous efforts to protect the Mau faced numerous challenges, but this new strategy, anchored on social fencing and strong public awareness, has received broad acceptance,” he explains.

The Kenya Forest Service has expressed full support for the initiative, noting that it comes at the right time to strengthen conservation efforts and will help accelerate the 15 billion trees target.
For Chief Conservator Lemarkoko, the Mau Forest is a personal mission. “I have dedicated more than 30 years to protecting Mau,” he says. “Now, we enjoy goodwill from local communities and political leadership alike.” He also acknowledges the strong backing of President William Ruto, whose support has been instrumental in driving conservation programmes.

Despite these successes, challenges remain. “The main hurdle has been identifying adequate land for planting seedlings and ensuring their long-term survival,” Lemarkoko explains.
Nevertheless, there are positive signs, particularly among the youth. Young people are increasingly participating in conservation efforts, including tree-hugging campaigns, reflecting a growing sense of responsibility toward protecting Kenya’s forests.

The Mau Forest Complex initiative represents a promising model for conservation — one that combines innovative approaches, public engagement, and strong leadership to safeguard one of Kenya’s most critical ecosystems while contributing to national environmental targets.
