ODM Affirms Support for Broad-Based Government Until 2027

By Chemtai Kirui, Nairobi

Kenya’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed its commitment to remain part of President William Ruto’s broad-based government until the 2027 general election, the party’s top leadership announced on Monday.

The decision was reached during a Central Committee meeting chaired by Senator Oburu Odinga, who has been acting as party leader following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga earlier this month.

In a statement released after the meeting, ODM said it would continue engaging with the Kenya Kwanza administration “in the spirit of national unity and continuity,” describing the arrangement as part of the late Odinga’s legacy of dialogue and stability.

“Our party remains committed to the broad-based government framework as agreed, to ensure the completion of key reforms and development priorities through 2027,” the statement read in part.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna said the decision was guided by ongoing consultations within the Azimio coalition and with the Office of the President. He added that the party’s participation was meant to “safeguard the democratic gains” achieved under Odinga’s leadership.

The Orange Democratic Movement, founded in 2005 and long led by Raila Odinga, has been one of Kenya’s most influential political movements. It joined President Ruto’s unity framework earlier in 2025 after bipartisan talks aimed at ending political polarisation.

Odinga’s passing has prompted questions about ODM’s succession and the future of opposition politics. Monday’s announcement comes amid growing speculation about the party’s direction and is seen as an effort to assure supporters of continuity while signalling a willingness to cooperate with government institutions in implementing national reforms.

Party insiders said the committee endorsed Senator Oburu Odinga to provide interim leadership while internal restructuring continues.

Political observers say ODM’s decision signals a stabilising move in Kenya’s political landscape following weeks of mourning and uncertainty.

The broad-based government, launched earlier this year, brought together leaders from across the political divide to promote shared governance and policy inclusion. ODM’s continued participation ensures representation of opposition-leaning regions within government decision-making structures.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen welcomed ODM’s announcement, saying it reinforces the government’s unity agenda.

“The spirit of inclusivity remains at the heart of our administration, and we appreciate ODM’s continued partnership in serving Kenyans,” Murkomen said.

ODM also reaffirmed its commitment to implement a 10-point reform agenda focusing on devolution, youth empowerment, health, agriculture, and electoral reforms — areas the party says align with national priorities under the current administration.

The party will hold a National Governing Council meeting next month to review grassroots structures and begin preparations for the 2027 polls.
