EU envoys visit northern Kenya to assess climate, digital, and land projects

ISIOLO, May 21 – Ambassadors from the European Union and eight member states are touring northern Kenya this week to assess EU-funded development projects and strengthen ties with regional leaders.
The three-day mission, which began on Tuesday, covers Samburu, Isiolo and Laikipia counties. It focuses on climate resilience, digital inclusion, biodiversity conservation, and land governance – key areas of cooperation under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.
In Isiolo, the delegation visited the Digital Land Governance Programme, a €20 million EU initiative implemented with the Kenyan government and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
The project supports spatial planning and land registry digitization in counties, aiming to improve transparency and reduce land-related disputes.
The envoys also toured Girgir Primary School in Samburu East, where the EU is funding last-mile internet connectivity and solar infrastructure to support digital learning in rural areas.
In Kalama and Nakupratt conservancies, the diplomats viewed community-led climate and water projects, including carbon sequestration and the newly launched Attan Water Project, which is designed to ease human-wildlife conflict.
The visit comes amid broader EU efforts to support Kenya’s sustainable development and deepen cooperation with county governments.
Similar EU missions were held last year in the coastal and western regions.
