Stop Hiding Children with Disabilities, Nandi MCA Urges Parents

By Nelson Tarbei,

Parents in Nandi County have been urged to stop hiding children living with disabilities, with local leaders emphasizing the importance of inclusion and support for all.

Speaking in Himaki, Chepkunyuk Ward, Brigid Songok—the Member of County Assembly (MCA) representing people living with disabilities—expressed concern over the growing number of cases where children with disabilities are being hidden by their families.

“Disability is not a curse,” she said. “Why should we believe in curses, yet we know we are all created in the image of God?”

Songok emphasized that persons with disabilities have a right to access assistive devices such as wheelchairs and crutches, provided through the support of the County Government of Nandi. She noted that such tools are essential for enabling independence and daily functionality.

The MCA also commended President William Ruto for signing into law the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025—a landmark legislation that provides a robust legal framework for promoting, protecting, and advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. The Act aligns with Kenya’s Constitution under Articles 2(6), 27, 54, and 260, as well as international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Songok was accompanied by Nandi County Leader of Majority and Kabiyet MCA Walter Teno, who assured residents that the county government is committed to helping people with disabilities access public services and economic opportunities, including business support.

The leaders made their remarks during a visit to Alice Chepkoech, a resident of Himaki living with a disability. During the visit, they donated a wheelchair and foodstuffs to support her well-being.
