By Festus Rono

Basic Education Permanent Secretary Ambassador Prof. Julius Bitok has issued a strong warning to teachers and education stakeholders against engaging in sexual relationships with learners, emphasizing that the government will take strict action against any perpetrators.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service at Tenwek High School in Bomet County, Prof. Bitok raised alarm over the increasing number of defilement and sexual abuse cases reported in schools.

“Recently, we have experienced a worrying increase in cases of defilement in our schools. As a government, we are saying enough is enough. Any individual found to have abused a learner will face the full force of the law,” Prof. Bitok stated firmly.

In addition to addressing issues of abuse, the PS noted that the government is undertaking reforms to streamline the education system and root out corruption in schools.

He also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the school environment, particularly in response to the growing student population.

“In the last two years, the government has allocated a bigger budget to the education sector. That’s why we’ve been able to hire 70,000 teachers since President Ruto took office,” he said.

Prof. Bitok urged residents of Bomet to support President William Ruto’s administration, saying the Head of State has a clear vision to transform the country through education and other key sectors.
