IEBC launches continuous voter registration ahead of 2027 elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has begun a nationwide continuous voter registration exercise, the first step in preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The commission, under new leadership appointed earlier this year, said the exercise will take place in all 290 constituencies and will also be supported by 57 Huduma Centres to improve accessibility. Transfers and corrections will continue to be handled in constituency offices.
IEBC Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana said the commission was committed to rebuilding public confidence.
“No eligible voter should be left behind. We must make registration accessible and convenient so that every voice is heard,” Dr. Mukhwana said on Monday.
IEBC projects a register of 28.5 million voters by 2027 and has adopted a phased approach: 10 percent of the target through the current exercise, 40 percent after the November 27 by-elections, and the remaining 50 percent in the next financial year.
“This exercise is not simply an administrative duty—it is the heartbeat of our democracy,” said Daniel Kokan, Deputy Speaker of the Kajiado County Assembly, during the launch event. “The only way to have your voice heard is by registering as a voter.”
Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku urged newly eligible voters to seize the opportunity.
“Your vote is your power, and your power begins with registration,” ole Lenku said.
The last general election in 2022 was marked by divisions within the commission and a disputed presidential result, later upheld by the Supreme Court. The new registration drive is seen as a key step in rebuilding confidence ahead of 2027.
The commission has invited all new eligible voters and those seeking transfers or updates to present their national identity card or valid passport at their constituency office.
IEBC officials said the launch marked “the commencement of the electoral process” toward the next polls.
