Government Proposes Animal Tracking Bill to Boost Livestock Health and Security
By Tom Chepsoi, Baringo County
The government, through the Ministry of Livestock, is in the process of legislating a bill aimed at introducing an animal tracking system to trace and identify livestock across the country.
Speaking during a public participation exercise in Kabarnet, Baringo County, Livestock Country Director Dr. Jane Njuguna said the proposed law seeks to reduce the spread of animal diseases and improve the quality of livestock products for export.
She added that the trackers will also help in collecting accurate data on livestock and enhance security by addressing challenges caused by uncontrolled movement of animals.
Dr. Ismael Kiptum noted that farmers in Baringo are likely to support the bill, saying it will play a key role in curbing diseases among livestock farmers.
