Cutting Methane Now Is Critical to Avoid Climate Disaster, Experts Warn
By Jackline Arusei || NAIROBI, Sept 23, 2025
A recent report published by the Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG) highlights an alarming message that without rapid action reducing methane emissions, by 2030 the world may find itself locked in up to 0.3°C of additional warming, beyond our ability to respond to climate impacts.
Methane might not stick around in the atmosphere as long as carbon dioxide, but it’s over 80 times more powerful at trapping heat in the short term. It’s already responsible for nearly half of the warming we’ve seen since the Industrial Revolution. Methane only stays in the atmosphere for just over ten years, so there is capacity to take urgent action to reduce warming.
The situation is especially urgent in Sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture produces over half of the region’s methane emissions. Despite more than 25 African countries joining the Global Methane Pledge, real action has been slow and that leaves communities, food supplies, and economies at risk.
The CCAG recognizes proven solutions across energy, agriculture and waste which would deliver a 45% reduction by 2030 at low cost, including:
- Stopping methane leaks and flaring in oil and gas operations
- Helping farmers improve animal feed and rice-growing methods
- Collecting and separating waste, and reducing food waste before it happens
