NAIROBI, May 20 – President William Ruto on Tuesday handed over keys to 1,080 new homeowners at the New Mukuru Housing Estate, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme aimed at addressing the country’s housing shortage.

The government-backed project seeks to provide affordable, decent housing options for low-income earners, offering a gated community equipped with amenities such as daycare centres, shops, and green spaces.

“This occasion is a true testament to the possibility of owning a home and building financial security,” Ruto said during the ceremony. “The New Mukuru Housing Estate is not simply about building homes. It is about reimagining urban life for low-income communities.”

Kenya faces an estimated housing deficit of two million units, with nearly 60% of Nairobi’s population living in informal settlements, according to government statistics.

The Affordable Housing Programme is part of the government’s broader effort to improve living standards and promote urban development.

The Mukuru estate is one of several housing projects underway across the country designed to provide secure, affordable homes to Kenya’s growing urban population.
