Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet and Ruth Chepngetich have officially etched their names into history books with their world records now ratified by World Athletics.
Chebet, the reigning world record holder in the 10,000m, solidified her legendary status at the 2024 Paris Olympics, clinching double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m.
The two-time world cross-country champion became only the third woman in history to achieve the Olympic distance double.
Her record-breaking moment came at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, where she blazed through the 10,000m in 28:54.14, slashing a remarkable seven seconds off Letesenbet Gidey’s 2021 record set in Hengelo.
On the road, Ruth Chepngetich delivered an equally entertaining and record performance at the Chicago Marathon, becoming the first woman to break the 2:10 barrier in women marathon history.
The 2019 world champion clocked a stunning 2:09:56, obliterating Tigist Assefa’s previous mark of 2:11:53, set in Berlin on 24 September 2023.
